More than 2,500 Ukrainian solders from Azovstal are in russian captivity.

The President of Ukraine stated that the Central Intelligence Agency has a task to return all prisoners home.

The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stated that more than 2,500 Ukrainian servicemen from Azovstal are in russian captivity. He said this during a meeting with journalists on Monday, June 6, Radio Svoboda reported.

According to him, the staff of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine must return all Ukrainian prisoners of war, including Azovstal, home.

“We know what can be agreed with the russians, we know this price. We know we can’t be trusted. The GUR must address this issue and deliver. The only result is to bring people home,“- Zelensky said.

He noted that the first task set before the GUR was to bring the Ukrainian military alive.

“The first part was to take people out alive. I believe that the GUR has fulfilled the first part. Today there is a second part – to bring them home alive,” – Zelensky added.

As for the treatment of these prisoners of war, the President hopes that the russian side is unfavorable to their inappropriate treatment, as they are “public prisoners” monitored by the world community.

It should be noted that on May 20, the russian Ministry of Defense announced that the Azovstal plant in Mariupol, which was the last stronghold of the defense of Ukrainian troops in the city, came under the control of Russian troops. The Ministry of Defense of the aggressor country stated that a total of 2,439 Ukrainian servicemen who were on the territory of the plant “surrendered”.

On May 21, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the hosts of the United News national telethon that defenders of Mariupol, withdrawn from the russian-occupied Azovstal plant, should be released in exchange.
