On Friday, July 29, the russians committed a mass murder in the penal colony in the occupied Olenivka, in Donetsk region, where Ukrainian prisoners were held. At first it was reported that the russians had shelled the POW camp with artillery, but it was later revealed that it had been blown up from within.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was the first to report the killing of Ukrainian prisoners of war. The message stated that the russians targeted the colony, where Ukrainian prisoners were kept, with artillery.
“The russian occupiers pursued their criminal goals in this way – to accuse Ukraine of committing “war crimes”, as well as to hide the torture of prisoners and executions, which they carried out there on the orders of the occupation administration and the command of the Soviet Union in the temporarily occupied territory of the Donetsk region”, – Gentshab of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported.
UP intelligence sources confirmed that the other day Ukrainian prisoners were transferred to the industrial zone, to the barracks that were later destroyed by the russians.
“It was a barrack in which Azov soldiers were, they were transferred to it a few days before the shelling, we still could not understand why,” – the intelligence said.
Information on the number of victims in the HUR has not been clarified at this time. Russian propagandists report that the death toll has risen to 53, and another 75 have been injured.
The founder of the “Azov” regiment and the leader of the “National Corps” Andriy Biletskyi commented on the mass killing of Ukrainian prisoners of war. According to him, prisoners from “Azovstal” were in the colony. Biletsky, on behalf of the “Azov” podrozils, announced a hunt for everyone involved in the mass murder.
“Russia could not defeat Azov in a fair fight, so it is trying to destroy us with treachery. I, on behalf of the Azov units, announce a hunt for everyone involved in the mass murder. Every rank-and-file performer and every organizer, regardless of position and place of stay, will bear responsibility. No matter where you hide, you will be found and exterminated,” – said the leader of the National Corps.
According to Biletskyi, the Ukrainian military is collecting information about the victims and perpetrators of this war crime.
The President’s Office stated that there are no operational military objectives for the Ukrainian army in Olenivka, which is occupied by russian troops, and that the attack by russian troops on the place of detention of Ukrainian prisoners of war was carefully planned.
Mykhailo Podolyak emphasized that the Armed Forces have all the tools to accurately identify the objects to be destroyed, and there were none in Olenivka.
“The purpose of the ‘Oleniv crime’ is to hide evidence of the growing scale of russian war crimes and torture, to disrupt exchange agreements, to discredit the Armed Forces of Ukraine and (in this case) specific models of foreign jet weapons that terrorize the russian occupiers”, – he pointed out.
Podolyak emphasized that the hysterical russian statements about the preemption of an attack on captured Ukrainian defenders are aimed at creating a resonance in Ukraine and aim to turn the population of various countries against our Armed Forces.
The president’s office noted that Ukraine requires an immediate firm response from the UN and other international organizations – russia must be excluded from any international institutions.
Later, the SBU published the negotiations of the DNR militants, from which it follows that russian troops were involved in the killing of Ukrainian prisoners of war. The SBU also noted that, most likely, the tragedy did not occur as a result of shelling of the building, but due to the detonation of explosives stored there by the occupiers.
According to the information of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, the colony in Olenivka was blown up by mercenaries of the “Wagner” PMC.
On Friday evening, the Security Service of Ukraine, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense and the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets made a joint statement, in which, in particular, they emphasized that russia violated the agreements reached during the withdrawal of the defenders “Azovstal” from the factory surrounded by enemy troops.
“On May 16, with the mediation of the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross, the process of evacuating the defenders of Mariupol from the territory of the Azovstal plant, which had been surrounded and under attack by Russian troops for a long time, began. The format of the evacuation provided for the establishment of a regime of silence and the surrender of the Ukrainian military as prisoners, with subsequent exchange under the guarantees of the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross. This format was chosen and approved by the defenders of Mariupol, who participated in the negotiations. […] The key condition of the chosen format was the obligations of the Russian side to international organizations regarding the preservation of the life and health of Ukrainian defenders. This guarantee was cynically violated,” – the statement states.
It emphasizes that such mass murder of Ukrainian prisoners of war was organized and planned. The authors of the statement drew attention, in particular, to the fact that there was not a single “DNR” fighter or colony guard among the injured or killed.
“The planned nature of this crime and its commission by the russian side are indicated by many documented evidences: in particular, the deliberate transfer of fighters to a new premises shortly before the explosion, analysis of the nature of the damage and the movement of the blast wave, the interception of the telephone conversations of the militants, the absence of shelling in the specified place, and others. All this leaves no doubt: the explosion in Olenivka was a russian terrorist act and a gross violation of international agreements,”- the authors of the statement summarized.
In connection with this war crime by the russian invaders, the Security Service of Ukraine, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the Ombudsman demand that the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross, which acted as guarantors of the lives and health of Ukrainian prisoners of war, immediately respond to this act of terrorism. They also demand to immediately send representatives of the UN, the ICRC, the Human Rights Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and representatives of the Joint Center for the Search and Release of Prisoners to the territory of the colony in Olenivka for the purpose of an inspection mission.
